YouTube Coachella Livestream

In 2023, I had the opportunity to lead the animation team for this incredibly fun spot announcing the Coachella Livestream on YouTube. In addition to some funky typography animation, we got to ingest tons of unique footage to incorporate into our designs and animations. Who doesn’t love funky gradients, warpy type, and rotoscoped celebrities? Watch the final spot below, as well as some R&D :)

My role on this project was Animation Lead, as well as After Effects animator. I gave the animation team direction for the look, as well as organized shots and kept things on track. There were many moving parts with all the rotoscoped footage.

R&D!

When we first began the project, the references we gathered had a lot of dynamic typography animation. So, naturally, we spent the first week or two busting out a plethora of tests for how the typography would behave in the spot. Ultimately, the language ended up being stretchy/warpy dynamic type, which is a majority of what our tests ended up being.

Here are some initial explorations on how we thought we could incorporate the footage into our visual language. We started off with a very spray-painterly language, but eventually landed on a smoother look. These were some of my favorite tests with footage from early on.
